Bizzarto Zen, modular sofa with reclining function and adjustable headrests
Recliner chairs & recliner sofas

Recliner chair or recliner sofa: relax your way.

An electric reclining function, a pull-out footrest or a footstool in front of your armchair: there is more than one way to truly unwind. Discover which designs suit you and put them together in 3D.

A recliner chair is an armchair in which you can relax in a half-lying position, because the backrest and footrest adjust. A recliner sofa, or sofa with a reclining function, offers the same comfort in a sofa.

At Bizzarto you will find both, in a clean, contemporary design. Swing has an electrically operated reclining function for the backrest, footrest and headrest. In Zen the reclining mechanism adjusts the angle of the backrest steplessly, and the compact Viva armchair is also available as a recliner with a pull-out footrest.

Prefer no mechanism? An armchair with a matching pouf or footstool, such as Loop or Brooklyn, also creates a place to unwind completely.

Mechanism or pouf

Reclining function or pouf: what is the difference?

A reclining function changes the position of the armchair or sofa itself. A pouf or footstool leaves the armchair as it is, but gives your legs somewhere to rest. Both are ways to relax; which one suits you depends on how you like to sit.

  • Electric reclining function: in Swing you adjust the backrest, footrest and headrest electrically, so everyone in the household finds their favourite position.
  • Reclining mechanism: in Zen the mechanism adjusts the angle of the backrest steplessly; you set the headrests separately.
  • Pull-out footrest: in the recliner version of Viva a footrest slides out, so you can relax half-lying in a compact armchair.
  • Pouf or footstool: no mechanism, but plenty of freedom. Put it wherever you like, use it as extra seating too and keep the clean lines of the armchair. Think of the Loop footstool (65 × 52 cm) or the poufs for Brooklyn, Viva, Soho and the Bofii armchair.

If you like to sit back for long stretches, a reclining function is a pleasure. If you prefer to switch between sitting upright, reading and stretching out, also take a look at sofas with an adjustable seat depth, such as Spring and Choco.

Buying guide

How to choose a recliner chair.

Five questions to help you find the model that matches the way you like to relax.

01

How do you like to sit?

Lounging half-lying in front of the TV calls for a reclining function, as in Swing, Zen or Viva. If you switch between upright and laid-back, an adjustable seat depth like that of Spring and Choco is a good alternative.

02

Support for head and neck

You will find adjustable headrests in La Roche, Zen, Swing and Mist. The Brooklyn wingback chair has a high backrest that supports your head.

03

How much space do you have?

A compact armchair such as Viva measures 78 × 93 cm. With a reclining function, allow for the space an extended footrest takes up; your interior consultant will gladly help you plan.

04

Soft or firm?

In Viva, Swing, Loop and Brooklyn you choose the softness of the seat and back yourself. That way you tailor the comfort to the way you like to sit.

05

Fabric and colour

Choose, together with your interior consultant, the fabric that suits your interior and the way you live, from velvet to bouclé, and look at the samples at home with the sample box.

Quality from within

Quality you can’t see, but can feel.

What you see and feel is the fabric and the beautiful design. The real quality of a recliner chair or recliner sofa is on the inside. In a piece of furniture that moves, that counts twice over: you use the mechanism every day.

  • Moving parts: the mechanisms for reclining, sleeping and adjustable functions are made for everyday use.
  • Construction: no chipboard, but thick, heavy wood, as a sturdy base under every mechanism.
  • Springs and foam: in the seats we use high-grade foam, including memory foam (the so-called NASA foam).
  • Weight: because of heavy, high-quality materials, a piece of Bizzarto furniture weighs noticeably more than average.

That makes your recliner strong and built for long, intensive use. Read more about quality from within and about our handmade furniture from our own workshop.

Design your own

A recliner sofa made to measure.

Swing and Zen are modular. Zen’s modules come with and without a headrest and with a reclining function, and can be freely combined. Swing has three seat widths, for any shape from a straight sofa to a corner layout. Read more about modular sofas.

In the 3D configurator you put your sofa together and see it in 3D straight away. You save your design without obligation, without paying anything, after which a Dutch interior consultant gets in touch. After your confirmation and a 50% deposit, your furniture is made by hand and delivered and installed at your home within 6–8 weeks, with a serial number and certificate.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about recliner chairs and sofas

What is a recliner chair?

A recliner chair is an armchair in which you can relax half-lying, because the backrest and footrest adjust. At Bizzarto, the compact Viva armchair is also available as a recliner: in that version a footrest slides out.

Which sofa has an electric reclining function?

Swing. With its electrically operated reclining function you set the position of the backrest, footrest and headrest just as you like. Swing is modular, with three seat widths, and is also available with a sleeping function and storage.

Is there a designer recliner chair?

Yes. Viva is a compact armchair that is also available as a recliner, with a matching pouf. If you are looking for a sculptural armchair to relax in, there is Loop by Krystian Kowalski, Red Dot Winner 2025, with a matching footstool and a chaise longue.

What is the difference between a recliner and an armchair with a pouf?

With a recliner, the armchair itself adjusts, for example with a pull-out footrest. With an armchair and pouf, the armchair stays as it is and you rest your legs on a separate pouf or footstool, which doubles as extra seating. Brooklyn, Soho, Viva and Bofii have a matching pouf, Loop a footstool.

Which sofas have adjustable headrests?

La Roche, Zen, Swing and Mist have adjustable headrests. In Zen you choose a version with or without a headrest for each module.

Can I adjust the seat depth of a sofa?

Yes. In Spring and Choco you slide the backrest to set the seat depth, from sitting upright to stretching out. In Choco, with the backrest pushed back, the depth approaches that of a chaise longue.

Is there a recliner sofa with a sleeping function?

Yes. Swing combines an electric reclining function with an easy-to-unfold sleeping function and storage in the chaise longue and in some of the poufs.

How do I recognise a good recliner sofa?

By what you cannot see: a construction of thick, heavy wood rather than chipboard, springs, high-grade foam and moving parts made for everyday use. That is why a Bizzarto recliner sofa is noticeably heavier than average and built for long, intensive use.
