Crafted furniture

Handmade furniture, down to every seam.

Every Bizzarto piece is made by hand in our own workshop in Poznań: by craftspeople with years of experience, only once you have designed it, and with a personal serial number and certificate.

Design your furniture

Handmade furniture is furniture that craftspeople build, upholster and finish by hand, rather than mass-produce. At Bizzarto every piece is made to order by hand in our own workshop in Poznań, by craftspeople with years of experience.

Poland is Europe’s largest furniture maker. In our workshop we combine that craft with innovation, and we work with high-quality construction materials, fabrics, fillings, yarns, metals and wood from top manufacturers. Handwork takes time and attention; you notice it in every detail and in how long your furniture lasts.

Our internationally award-winning designs are made the same way: the design comes from leading designers, the execution from the hands in our workshop.

How is handmade furniture made?

From design to final seam: every Bizzarto piece passes through the hands of experienced craftspeople. This is how your furniture comes about.

01

Development

Every piece is developed by our own development, technology and model-making departments. Our Design & Technology department develops comfort for every body height: well-profiled backrests and carefully chosen seat and back components.

02

The frame

The skeleton of your furniture: no chipboard, but thick, heavy wood. Sometimes the wood is deliberately left visible, as in the sculptural wooden frame of Torii.

03

Springs and foam

Beneath the fabric, the craftspeople build in springs and high-quality foam, including memory foam. In Mood, a proprietary combination of different springs works together with high-resilience foams.

04

Cutting, sewing and upholstering

By hand. For the Arch chair, experienced craftspeople shape the chair with great precision, stretch the fabric and lay every seam. For Dune, shaping the curved cushions and applying the right stitching take experience and manual skill.

05

Serial number and certificate

Every piece receives a personal serial number and certificate. For an award-winning piece, the design award it has won is also stated on the certificate.

Craftsmanship

How can you tell that furniture is handmade?

By the details. A few examples from our collection:

  • Loop: the distinctive solid oak base demands a great deal of skill and experience from the furniture makers.
  • Aston: a French seam along the sides and the edges of the seats traces the line of the sofa.
  • Norman: back cushions sewn in an unusual way, with distinctive stitching along the edges.
  • Arch: the crafted details can only be achieved by hand; the arched legs are covered in fabric or leather.
  • Purro: created in collaboration with skilled furniture makers and made by hand from solid oak, with the grain left visible.
  • Tondo: the coffee table with three tops is made by experienced craftspeople, with great attention to a careful finish.
  • Hiddo: a bed frame without visible joints, a solution developed by Bizzarto.

Quality on the inside

Quality you can’t see, but can feel.

What you see and feel is the fabric and the beautiful design. The real quality of a piece of furniture is something you cannot see: it lies in what the craftspeople in our workshop build in underneath.

  • No chipboard: the construction is made of thick, heavy wood.
  • Heavy, high-quality materials: which is why Bizzarto furniture is noticeably heavier than average. Lift a module and you feel the difference.
  • Foam: in the seats we use high-quality foam, including memory foam, the so-called NASA foam.
  • Springs: for resilience and even support of the seat.
  • Moving parts: mechanisms for reclining, sleeping and adjustment are made for daily use. The Italian sleeping mechanism of Flow is designed for years of regular use, and in Zen the recline mechanism adjusts the backrest steplessly.

The result: furniture that is strong and built for long, intensive use. How a sofa is built layer by layer, from frame to filling, is explained on our page on quality on the inside.

Made to order

How long does it take to make a handmade piece?

At Bizzarto you do not choose from whatever happens to be in stock. Your furniture is only made once you have designed it: the size, the fabric, the colour, the base and, in many collections, the seating comfort. Read more about custom-made furniture.

  • Design: in the 3D configurator or together with a Dutch interior consultant, online or at your home.
  • Confirm: you receive an invoice for a 50% deposit.
  • Made by hand: after the deposit your furniture goes into production; within 6–8 weeks it is ready.
  • Delivery: you are notified a week in advance. After the final payment your furniture is delivered and installed, with serial number and certificate.

And because the construction is so durable, we can reupholster your furniture after years: a new fabric, the same familiar comfort.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about handmade furniture

What is handmade furniture?

Furniture that craftspeople build, upholster and finish by hand, rather than mass-produce. At Bizzarto every piece is made to order by hand in our own workshop in Poznań, from the frame to the final seam.

Where is Bizzarto furniture made?

In our own workshop in Poznań, in Poland. Every piece is made there by hand by craftspeople with years of experience and receives a personal serial number and certificate.

Why is a handmade Bizzarto sofa so heavy?

Because we do not economise on what you cannot see. The construction is thick, heavy wood rather than chipboard, and we work with heavy, high-quality materials, springs and high-quality foam, including memory foam. That is why the sofa weighs noticeably more, and why it is strong and built for long, intensive use.

How do you recognise high-quality furniture?

By the inside and by the details. Quality furniture has a sturdy construction of wood rather than chipboard, springs and high-quality foam, and mechanisms made for daily use. Look at the finish too: seams and stitching such as Aston’s French seam or Norman’s stitching take craftsmanship. And try lifting the piece: you can feel quality.

How long does it take to make a handmade piece of furniture?

After the deposit your furniture goes into production. Within 6–8 weeks it is made by hand and delivered and installed at your home. You are notified a week in advance.

Can a handmade sofa be reupholstered?

Yes. The construction is so durable that we can reupholster your furniture after years. That way you keep the familiar comfort, in a new fabric.

What does a handmade designer piece cost?

That depends on the model, the size and the fabric. You first design your furniture without obligation; after the consultation your interior consultant sends you a personal quotation for exactly your design.

Can I see how my furniture is made?

Yes. If you choose an interior from € 15,000, we invite you on a design trip to Poland, including a visit to the factory in Poznań, where you see how your furniture is made by hand, and to our showroom in Warsaw.
